Week 33 Luke
A couple of years ago I discovered that Luke structured his gospel along geographic lines. The first nine chapters take place in Galilee & the northern districts. The next ten chapters are the story of Jesus’ last trip to Jerusalem.
On the one hand it’s hard to believe that everything in chapters ten-to-nineteen happened in that one trip. On the other hand I know Luke is free to construct his own story.
For example let’s say I do a walking road-trip: Medicine Hat to Vancouver. Afterward I write a travelogue. Here’s a snippet:
…Progress is good. If the weather holds I’ll get to Revelstoke tomorrow and stop there for a day or two. I like the place. I remember passing through ten years ago. I was in a cafe eating a bacon-and-egg sandwich minding my own business when an old guy at the next table started talking. Said he’d panned for gold in the area when he was in his twenties. Told me about a time he was working a stream that came down out of the mountains. He was alone and it was getting late in the day…
Technically the guy’s placer mining story has nothing to do with my trip. But then again…it does.
Anyway…reading Luke my ground zero is this: I expect the story to be true. Beyond that I accept that it’s Luke’s account to compose. So I can go along without a lot of nitpicking & second-guessing.
